Indonesia has announced that millions of accounts linked to users under the age of 16 have been removed from major social media platforms as the country begins enforcing stricter online safety regulations.
Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said TikTok deactivated around 4.1 million accounts belonging to underage users, while YouTube removed approximately 600,000 accounts following government requirements.
The government said the action is part of a broader effort to protect children online and reduce risks associated with social media use, including cyberbullying, excessive screen time, and digital addiction.
The new rules, introduced through a March regulation, require platforms considered high-risk to restrict access for users below the age limit. Authorities said other platforms, including X, Instagram, and Roblox, have also been included in the compliance process.
Indonesia’s move follows growing global discussions around children’s access to digital platforms. Countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom have introduced or considered stricter measures aimed at limiting potential online harms affecting young users.
Officials said the government is currently reviewing compliance reports submitted by technology companies and expects all platforms operating in Indonesia to follow the updated requirements.
TikTok and YouTube had not provided immediate comments regarding the account removals.
