Alexia Putellas is set to join London City Lionesses in a major transfer move for the Women’s Super League club, with the two-time Ballon d’Or winner opting for south London after leaving Barcelona.
The 32-year-old departed Barcelona in May after 14 years at the club and had drawn interest from a number of sides, including Boston Legacy in the United States. London City Lionesses emerged as the frontrunners for her signature, although the move has yet to be formally completed.
The potential signing would mark a significant statement of intent from the independent women’s club, which finished sixth in its first season in the top flight. London City Lionesses have continued to make headlines in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their squad further.
Putellas leaves Barcelona with an outstanding record. She won 38 trophies during her time there, including 10 league titles, and scored 232 goals in 507 appearances. She also played a key role in Spain’s 2023 World Cup triumph and was part of the squad that finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025.
Her career has also included a major setback, with an ACL injury ruling her out of Euro 2022 on the eve of the tournament. She returned to action the following season and soon recaptured the form that made her one of the most decorated players in women’s football.
London City Lionesses are understood to have been pursuing the Spain midfielder since January and are believed to have put forward a strong offer. If the deal is finalised, it would rank among the biggest signings in the club’s history.
