The United States could be a contender to host the 2038 men’s World Cup, according to the executive director of the White House’s World Cup task force. The comments come as the US prepares to co-host the 2026 tournament with Canada and Mexico.
Andrew Giuliani said the country could handle a larger World Cup if FIFA expands the competition further to 64 teams. But he added that the priority should remain on delivering the 2026 tournament successfully before any future bid is considered.
The 2038 edition is the next World Cup for which the hosting process is expected to open. The 2030 tournament has already been awarded to Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the opening matches to be staged in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to mark the event’s 100th anniversary. Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup.
Giuliani said the US already has much of the infrastructure needed to stage another major tournament, pointing to its existing stadiums and lower build costs compared with other host nations. He argued that the country is well placed to host on a large scale without the massive spending usually required for such events.
His remarks come during a World Cup cycle in which the US is set to stage 78 of the 104 matches. The tournament has also drawn scrutiny over visa issues, travel costs and concerns raised by rights groups about the wider climate for foreign visitors.
Despite those criticisms, Giuliani said he had discussed the possibility of another bid with President Donald Trump and described the US as a welcoming destination with strong infrastructure. He said the current tournament is also giving international visitors a chance to see the country on a global stage.
